Documenting Gulp!

An essential component of Gulp! gallery were the guestbooks which traveled with the gallery, if not physically, then in spirit. The two books used to serve the purpose of textbooks but were severely altered through their involvement with the gallery. Artists were obliged to decorate the pages of the book in any way they saw fit for the audience to write comments.

Given the international nature of the gallery the book could not always be present at each exhibition. In these cases the artists constructed pages which were later delivered to the curators, who pasted them into the book.

The guestbooks became a work of art in themselves. Many artists put a great deal of work into (decorating) 'their pages' and the books now contain many exceptional displays of creativity.
